Roots ‘n’ Reading is a youth literacy program with an outdoorsy twist. Low-income kids work with volunteers, staff, & educators at two community gardens in St. Paul, MN. They grow tasty produce & reading skills at the same time. By summer’s end, they host a potluck lunch for friends & family.
Established in 1972, Project for Pride in Living (PPL) is a nonprofit dedicated to vibrant, healthy communities throughout the Twin Cities region. Our Youth Development Program helps kids and their families out of poverty by connecting them to a network of integrated support services and affordable housing. Roots ‘n’ Reading will use GOOD Corp funds to purchase gardening tools and harvesting baskets. Funds will also support volunteers, staff, and program partners as they lead small group and individual literacy games, promote a whole foods diet, show kids how to maintain two PPL community garden plots, and organize end-of-summer family potlucks.
