Bikes give homeless youth access to outdoor exercise, green transportation, and job opportunities. Organized rides for 8-10 youth twice a month will highlight different biking cultures (Road, Commuter, Mountain, BMX, Velodrome) and will culminate in a two-day, 100-mile ride for 5-7 homeless youth.
Working with homeless youth taught us three things: 1) No matter what their background, young people love bikes; 2) Young people want to learn and work; and 3) Engaging in an activity — like fixing a bike — helps people let go of stress and relax.
Full Cycle Bike Shop internships give homeless youth a six month, paid experience learning bike repair skills, resume writing skills, job interview skills, and other life skills. Now we want to get them outside and riding!
We have the youth, staff, and bikes needed for these rides. We have a van to transport teens and bikes to biking locations. $5000 will fund the costs for helmets, trailers, saddlebags, tool kits, water bottles, first aid, food, parts, and supplies to refurbish donated bikes.
