Overview of Outdoor Idea

:

WARNING: This subversive project will lead to participants of all kinds working together to create LIVING SEATING that will surround Baltimore's first LIVING CHAIR, recently built for readers, story tellers, poets, and musicians to amuse, delight, inform, enlighten, and entertain the community.

The Specifics: What will the $5,000 fund?

Funding will be used to work with the local community to create LIVING BASKET STOOLS from live willow. Planted in the ground, the stools will be woven like baskets and filled with soil in which herb "cushions" will grow, providing a fragrant surprise for participants when they sit down. Funding will also be used for the on-going maintenance of the stools (watering, pruning, etc). Three to five stools will be completed at the weekly Farmers Market that is located, with the project, next to Rawlings Conservatory in Druid Hill Park, Baltimore’s largest urban park. A summertime link to the community's winter reading program in a nearby mall, the project is an expression of the community’s originality and unique creative vision for itself.

Love the idea and the community involvement BUT it sounds like $5,000 for 3 to 5 stools. I know that is not what you mean. Can you clarify THE SPECIFICS? A pix or drawing of a prototype stool would be good, too.

Thanks for your thoughts, french50. Unfortunately, we can't add a photo now, but the specifics are that the stools will be made from living willow uprights planted in the ground in a circle. Willows will then be woven through the uprights, as you would for a basket. When the desired height is reached, the baskets will be filled with soil, the uprights crossed to form a seat, and thyme will be planted on the top. We plan to create 3-5 stools a week for a total of 18-20 stools.

What a wonderful idea! I love the tying the living chair and community story telling together. I am so heartened to know there are smart people, doing good things for the community.

As you can see from the photo, seating for participants is badly needed. To that end, we plan to complete 3-5 basket stools per week for a total of approximately 18-20 stools that will sit on a "rug" created by mulch recycled from dead trees in the park.
